Local champion Sean Moloney was valiant in defeat at the MAC10 Short Track Mountain Bike Race on Saturday evening. With a stacked A Grade field including Canberra's Joe Lewis, Mt beauty's Neil van der Ploeg and local riders Geoff Schilg, Brad Rose and Scott McPherson. The short track is a sprint event lasting for 15minutes plus 2 laps of a 1km course.
Riders exploded out of the start gate at a furious pace with Sean taking the lead followed closely by Shane Corish. Neil soon rounded them up and created a 10 metre gap which he held for the first 5 minutes of the race. Sean and Joe then worked together to close the gap and join Neil at the pointy end of the field. The 3 leaders then went about trying to break each other, putting in surges and sprinting away only to be reeled in again and the pack coming back together. The pace was frenetic and all riders looked fatigued and struggling to hold the pace.
With one lap to go Neil turned the screws hard, exploding forward, sprinting out of the saddle he created a small gap, Joe fought hard and caught back on and Sean lost contact after a valiant effort against national level competition.
The race ended with a frenetic sprint to the finish arch. Neil looked like he had it, then Joe fought back like a terrier to briefly take the lead before Neil surged one last time to take the win by the width of a tyre. A fantastic finish to a very exciting race.
16 year old Brad Rose rolled over the line in a very respectable 4th place. After being near the rear of the field after the first lap he clawed his way back into contention.
In the other divisions B Grade was taken out by Bonegilla resident Jukka Pirkola in another sprint finish. Albury's Justin Godfrey fought his way back from the rear of the field on the first lap to passing near the whole field and challenging Jukka for the title. 3rd place went to early leader Dylan Clift.
Mathew Krautz (Albury) held off a fast finishing Andrew Kaye in the C Grade event, they were followed in by Manuel Daellenback in third.
Albury local Christopher Boyall led from start to finish in the Junior event. Dominic Brew rode a very good race to finish 2nd followed by Edward Dean in third.
Event organiser Danny King – “The event was a massive success. To have such close racing in all categories, a large crowd watching and such and national level riders like Neil, Joe and Sean just make a fantastic spectacle and a great advertisement for the sport.”
