Junior Road Cycling
Unfortunately the inclement weather resulted in Junior numbers being down. Competitors travelled from Wangaratta and as far away as Canberra to compete. Clubs represented were Albury Wodonga CC, Canberra CC, Lavington Panthers CC and Wangaratta CC.
Set 1 – Scratch Races
Despite this the Kids who participated had a fantastic time with some fast and furious Racing, each of them pushing themselves to the limit.
The U9/11's were 1st to go and they went hard from the start to the finish with Samantha Thomson challenging Douglas White for the lead throughout the race and to the line. Douglas managed to hold out, but only just. Ruth Little kept the Leaders within reach finishing in 3rd position.
The U13 Girls & Boys were next to go, but had the additional challenge of racing while the rain came down and drenched them. To spite this and with the grime and dirt off of the road flying up into there eyes, they pushed on hard determined to do well.
There were a couple of scares on the slippery road at the “U” Turn at the top of the Short Course Climb.
The Bunch pretty much stayed together for the first half of the Race. Nahum Little and Emily White then broke away from the Bunch, taking turns until the Bell Lap. Nahum managed to pull away ever so slightly to win the race with Emily White fighting it out all the way, hot on his heels across the Finish Line.
The U15 Girls & Boys Stuck together, taking turns until about ½ way through the race, when Jack Day decided to put some distance between himself and the Girls. Early in the race with wet roads, Sophia Drury had a major slip sideways with both her feet coming out of her cleats causing her to fall onto her top bar and very much pain. She managed to stay on her “Bucking Bronco” momentarily putting a toe on the ground to straighten and get herself back in the Saddle. She rode on grimacing in pain with tears running down her cheeks in the rain, remaining in the bunch and taking her turn. Rebecca Thomson also came loose in the final stages of the race on what became the most notorious corner of the day.
Jack won the Race well clear of the girls, with Sophia the 1st Girl and Bec 2nd close behind.
The U17/19 Women rode well together despite not seeming to be in that much of a hurry on the 1st couple of laps. The pace picked up as the race went on with Katrina Rose (2010 U17 Women's Mountain Bike Champion) and Jessica White breaking away from Stephanie Tracey. Katrina and Jess pushed themselves hard on the Bell Lap.
Jess fell heavily as she went into the turn at the top of the home straight, crashing onto the ground and requiring some medical attention.
Katrina finished convincingly in 1st place, Steph in 2nd and Jess being award 3rd.
The U17 Men rode at the same time as the D Grade Men. They also rode well together, taking turns, with the ever eager Zachary Drury leading most of race. They stayed close together until last Lap. Phil Jermyn powered away on the final part of the Bell Lap to earn himself the top place on the Podium. Zach was close behind finishing 2nd with Sean Whitfield challenging him, taking 3rd. Local, Thomas Staats who took up Cycling as a sport just before Xmas finished closely in 4th.
Women's B Grade
Next up the U17/19 Women competed in the B Grade Women's Criterium. Katrina's Bike is only set up for U17 races limiting her Roll Out to 6.5m and only 10 gears. The Women do not have gear restrictions and have a total of 20 gear selections available. Jess & Katrina worked very well with the B Brade Women in a long hard race, with Katrina placing 3rd and Jess 4th.
Set 2 – Handicap Races
To spice things up a bit we combined the U9/11's and U13's into a combined Handicap Race. We then put the U15's Girls & Boys and the U17 Men into a 2nd combined Handicap Race.
The U9/11's & U13's Handicap was an exciting race with Ruth being 2nd to start and Nahum on Scratch at 1 minute 40 seconds. Young Thomas White started first as Limit with a 30 second advantage over Ruth. Ruth rode the Race of her Life picking up Thomas early in the race and holding on to Win with Samantha doing her utmost to catch her and coming in a near 2nd. Thomas finished 3rd with Scratch coming in hard and fast at 4th.
The U15's Girls & Boys & U17 Men was hotly contested with the U17 Men's Winner, Phil having the unenviable task of being Scratch and the other U17 men as Block. Phil put everything he had into the race picking up every one else to take 1st place. Zach who was 1st Block finished strongly in 2nd with Thomas taking 3rd. Bec was the 1st of the Girls in at 4th.
Sophia who had hurt herself badly in the earlier race, rode well but not at full pace enjoyed her ride and had a HUGE Grin on her face every time she crossed the Start/Finish Line.
Sean's was affected by an injury he received during the week leading up to the event, the previous race aggravating the injury and affecting his performance.
Summary
Despite the weather and the spills the Kids all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Each of them going home with at least one Prize and an enjoyable memory.
